Meet the New Generation of Wine Makers in Todi

Updated: Sep 23

Along the wine route called ‘Strada dei Vini del Cantico’ The Canticle Wine Route. That covers 13 communes in the region of Umbria. Within the Comune of Todi there is a new wave of innovative visionaries. These winemakers are taking the traditional grape varieties to another level. They are re-writing the story of wine making in Todi

Discover the valley of Todi dubbed 'The Hamptons of Umbria.' Dotted with Castles, medieval hill towns, luxury Villa's and Boutique Wine Resorts. Here are a few of our favorites places to visit.

Cantina Peppucci

At the end of the 80’s Piero Peppucci and Luisa Giontella were in search of a country property. A place out of their native town Todi where they could raise their children. The abandoned monastery of S.Antimo looked like the perfect place.

Today their son Filippo Peppucci runs the Estate with passion and innovation. The wines are an authentic expression of the land. Using native varietals that include both Grechetto di Todi DOC and Sagrantino with a selection of red international varietals.

Filippo Peppucci

It is always a memorable visit when you get to meet the winemaker at his winery. Filippo is a gracious host filled with knowledge. The tour begins overlooking his exceptional estate with 13 hectares of vineyards. Fillippo designs his own wine labels.

The estate leads the way in relaunching Grechetto di Todi. Having replanted only Grechetto di Todi as the Estates white varietal. Fillippo was convinced it was possible to elevate the cultivar. Together with wine maker Lorenzo Landi. The Estate produces two exceptional 100% Grechetto di Todi wines Montorsolo Grechetto di Todi DOC and 'I Rovi' Grechetto di Todi Superiore DOC. From 2014 'I Rovi' comes from a selection of the best cru Grechetto di Todi.

Red varietals include Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. 'Petroro 4' is an elevant Umbria Rosso IGT made with Sangiovese. Refined in Stainless Steel Tanks. A brilliant ruby red with fragrant notes of forrest fruits. l'Altro io includes the native varietal Sagrantino that is typically harvested in the first months of October. It is refined in French Oak for 18 months followed by 12 months in the bottle.

'Giovanni' is named after Fillippo's first born expresses the quality of estates Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the 'Vigna dei Sassi' that translates to the 'vines on the rocks'. A production that is limited to only 5000 bottles. Depending on the year Cabernet Sauvignon is combined with Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Altro Io Passito with only 500 bottles each vintage. This dessert wine that as Fillippo explains can even be enjoyed with savory or a refined cheese charcuterie pays homage to the origins of the Sagrantino Grape. A late harvest dryed on cane mats to allow for a high concentration of sugar.

Roccafiore Wine Resort and Spa

It so happens that Fillippo Peppucci grew up with Luca Baccarelli. Luca is owner of Roccafiore. A Sustainable Wine Resort. The Baccarelli Family have created more than a beautiful boutique resort. They have created a story of love, tradition and respect for their land. With 15 hectares of vineyards. Grape varietals include Grechetto di Todi, Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Montepulciano along with international varietals Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of the first wineries in Italy to adopt solar power that saves 90,000kg of CO2 per year in emissions. You can visit the Cantina to enjoy a tasting that also includes estates Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The Wine Resort and Hotel has 13 guest rooms. The swimming pool and gardens look over the medieval hill town of Todi. The resort and cellars were designed by Lucina Caravaggi, Giorgio Cresciani with Francesco Cerroni.

The Wine Chalet located a short distance from the Resort. The wine chalet sleeps two guests. A full immersion of nature surrounded by woodlands and grape vines.

Enjoy a holistic experience at the Anthea Spa. Where you can relax in a Roman sauna, therapeutic water massage & massage

At the estates restaurant that overlooks the historical hill town of Todi. Chef Carlo Grimaldi reinterpreted seasonal and regional Umbrian dishes

Agri Segretum

Twenty years ago wine maker Lorenzo de Monaco began planting original varieties Sangiovese and Sagrantino. Today Agrisegretum is a part of the new Todi DOC appellation.

Located in the Tiber Valley between Todi and Perugia at an altitude of 300metres above sea level. Tradtionally the grapes grown in this area were taken to coopertive wineries to produce table wines. Agri Segretum has changed that image to producing a quality production.

It is not surprising the symbol of the estate Pottarello. Made with 80% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia nera and 10% Colorino added to 500litre tonneux for 12 months added directly into the bottle with out filtration for 9 months is part of Veronelli’s Gold guide to Italian Wines.

At the Agri Segretum Estate enjoy a stay at Eileen and Lorenzo’s luxury Villa - Villa La Segreta. Set on a 70-acre nature reserve. The property sleeps 8+2. Ideal for travellers picking up car rental from Rome or Florence.
