3 Top Boutique Wine Makers to Visit in Todi

The hills surrounding Todi, between Perugia and the Tiber Valley, are home to a collection of small, family-run estates producing wines with a strong sense of place. Medieval villages, vineyards, olive groves and country estates spill across the landscape.

At the centre of its revival is Grechetto di Todi, the local white grape that has become one of the signatures of the Todi DOC, created in 2010. The appellation covers Todi, Collazzone, Massa Martana and Monte Castello di Vibio, with Grechetto, Sangiovese and other varieties forming part of the denomination
For those of us who love discovering the people behind the bottle, these are three boutique estates we particularly enjoy.

Cantina Peppucci — Wine Inside a Medieval Monastery
The story of Cantina Peppucci begins in the late 1980s, when Piero Peppucci and Luisa Giontella discovered the abandoned medieval monastery of Sant’Antimo in the countryside outside Todi.
What began as a place to raise their family gradually became a wine estate. Today the property is led by their son Filippo Peppucci, who oversees the winemaking and the estate. The vineyards combine indigenous varieties — including Grechetto di Todi, Sagrantino and Sangiovese — with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
One of the wines that best expresses the estate today is I Rovi, Grechetto di Todi Superiore DOC, produced entirely from Grechetto di Todi. First produced in 2014, it comes from a selection of the estate’s finest Grechetto grapes and shows just how much character this once-underestimated Umbrian variety can offer
What makes a visit particularly memorable, however, is its intimacy. It is the opportunity to stand among the vineyards, explore the cellar and understand the wines through the family that produces them

Filippo is a warm and knowledgeable host, sharing the story of the estate as you look out across its 13 hectares of vineyards. His creative touch extends beyond the cellar too — Filippo also designs the estate’s distinctive wine labels

The estate has played an important role in the revival of Grechetto di Todi, choosing to dedicate its white-wine production entirely to this native Umbrian grape. Filippo believed strongly in the variety’s potential and, together with winemaker Lorenzo Landi, set out to show just how refined and expressive it could be.
Today Cantina Peppucci produces two standout wines from 100% Grechetto di Todi: Montorsolo Grechetto di Todi DOC and I Rovi Grechetto di Todi Superiore DOC. First produced in 2014, I Rovi is made from a selection of the estate’s finest Grechetto grapes and represents the winery’s most ambitious interpretation of this distinctive local varietal.

The estate’s red varieties include Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, producing wines that range from fresh and elegant to rich and structured.
Among them, Petroro 4 is an Umbria Rosso IGT based on Sangiovese, with a bright ruby colour and fragrant notes of wild berries. At the other end of the spectrum is L’Altro Io, a small-production passito made from the native Sagrantino grape. Aged in French oak and then refined in bottle, only around 500 bottles are produced in each vintage.
Rich and concentrated, L’Altro Io is a beautiful wine to enjoy at the end of a meal, particularly with aged cheeses and savoury accompaniments.

Giovanni, named after Filippo’s firstborn son, is one of the estate’s most personal wines. It is centred around Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the Vigna dei Sassi — literally, the “vineyard of stones” — where the rocky soils contribute character and structure to the wine.
Produced in limited quantities of around 5,000 bottles, Giovanni may also include Merlot and Cabernet Franc, depending on the vintage, creating a refined and expressive red that reflects both the vineyard and the estate’s more international side.

Roccafiore — Organic Wine, Olive Groves & Views of Todi
Just outside Todi, Roccafiore combines an organic winery, country resort, spa and restaurant amid vineyards and olive groves overlooking the medieval skyline. The estate has approximately 15 hectares of vineyards surrounding the resort, farmed according to organic and sustainable principles
Roccafiore is particularly associated with Grechetto di Todi, alongside other Umbrian varieties, and offers travellers the opportunity to experience wine as part of the wider agricultural landscape rather than simply in the tasting room.

One of the first wineries in Italy to adopt solar power that saves 90,000kg of CO2 per year in emissions. You can visit the Cantina to enjoy a tasting that also includes estates Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The Roccafiore Wine Resort is an intimate countryside retreat with just 13 guest rooms, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and sweeping views towards the medieval hill town of Todi. Its gardens and swimming pool make the most of the landscape, while the resort and cellars were designed to blend contemporary architecture with the natural beauty of the estate.
For an even more secluded stay, the Wine Chalet sits a short distance from the main resort. Designed for two guests, it offers a peaceful escape immersed in woodland and vines — an ideal choice for travellers looking to experience the Umbrian countryside at its quietest.

For travellers wanting to stay surrounded by vines, Roccafiore also has a secluded Wine Chalet tucked into woodland beside the vineyards — a beautiful option for experiencing the quieter side of Umbria.

That same philosophy continues at its Fiorfiore restaurant, where seasonal Umbrian dishes are paired with wines and extra-virgin olive oil produced by the estate. Homemade pasta, truffles and locally raised meats all feature in a cuisine rooted firmly in the region

Agri Segretum — Organic Wines With an Umbrian Soul

Between Perugia and Todi, close to the medieval village of Collazzone, Agri Segretum feels wonderfully personal. Owners Eileen and Lorenzo began their project around two decades ago with the idea of remaining faithful to Umbrian soil and traditional grape varieties. Their vineyards were planted with varieties including Sangiovese and Sagrantino, rather than relying on international grapes, and today the estate is certified organic.

The vines sit on a southwest-facing hillside at approximately 300 metres above sea level, with limestone and clay soils. Vineyard work and harvesting remain highly hands-on, while fermentation uses naturally occurring yeasts. Their wines even carry names inspired by local dialect. Pottarello, a Todi DOC Rosso, blends Sangiovese with Malvasia Nera and Colorino, while Marmocchio combines Sangiovese Grosso and Sagrantino.
The estate also produces its own organic extra-virgin olive oil from Moraiolo, Frantoio and Leccino olives, harvested early and pressed immediately — another essential taste of the Umbrian countryside.
Visits here are deliberately relaxed. Wine can be tasted alongside the estate olive oil, local cheeses, salumi and, depending on the season, fruit and nuts grown on the property.
